Since the beginning of time, people have always harnessed the sun’s energy for their own purposes, with the sophistication of the methods used increasing, as the years go by. The sun’s energy – or solar energy – can be harnessed in two ways, either actively or passively. Passively harnessing solar energy can be something as simple as owning materials in your home which utilize heat from the sun’s rays, or even windows facing the sun, which capture the heat. Actively harnessing solar power is most common through the use of solar panels.
Solar panels capture the sun’s rays and convert them into electrical or mechanical energy. Sunlight is converted into electrical energy by using photovoltaic’s (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP). If you have ever noticed the tiny solar panel on solar-powered calculator, then you have seen a PV cell. Photo means ‘sun’ and voltaic means ‘energy’ – so as the phrase implies, the cells are converting sunlight into electricity. PV cells are made of semiconductors, and when the sunlight hits the solar panel a portion of it is absorbed by the semiconductor. The absorbed light is energy, and this loosens electrons in the semiconductor. The electrons flow in a certain direction. It is this flow that then creates the current that is used to generate electricity.
Solar panels energy is a way in which you can harness great amounts of the sun’s energy for your own home. This energy can then be used to run your appliances and heat or cool your home. As there is no sunlight during the night, or on particularly cloudy days, solar panels energy is an intermittent source of energy. This means that it needs to be supplemented with another power source. Good examples of this are wind power, and stored solar power – as solar energy can also be stored in batteries for later use.
In the past, many people have looked in to the option of purchasing solar panels for their home, only to be put off by the relatively high price of purchasing and installing them. But in recent years solar technology has been refined, the actual size of the solar panels has decreased, and the purchase price of the solar panels has come down as well.
This means that solar panels energy is now a cost effective way of creating enough energy to power and heat or cool your home. People are often surprised when they find that when using solar panels energy they are actually creating and storing more energy than they actually require. The upshot of this is great savings on your energy bills. It is not unheard of for the power companies to actually pay you for the excess energy which you have created. Solar technology is relatively easy to understand, and it is even possible to create your own solar panels with materials from your own home or local home improvement store. Solar panels can save you money, and helps save stocks of other energy sources at the same time.
